Your Path to Panama Residency, Step by Step

Five residency programs, explained simply. We help you pick the right one and coordinate every step with our licensed partner law firm in Panama.

How can you get residency in Panama?

Last updated October 29, 2026 · Reviewed by Sandro Riccardo Presta, founder of The Bridge Alliance

Short answer: Most foreigners use one of three programs: Friendly Nations (for citizens of listed countries, including Canada and the U.S.), Pensionado (for retirees with a lifetime pension of at least US$1,000 per month) or Qualified Investor. A licensed Panamanian attorney must file the application; The Bridge Alliance coordinates documents, banking, housing and your arrival.

Who this is for, and how we work

WHO WE HELP

Americans, Canadians and other Friendly Nations citizens, retirees with a pension, and investors who want Panama as a home base, not just a stamp in a passport.

TIME FRAME

From planning before you arrive, through filing in Panama, to settling in afterward: banking, housing and renewals.

WHO DOES WHAT

The Bridge Alliance coordinates your move. A licensed Panamanian law firm files your application, and tax professionals in your home country handle your exit.

RULES WE FOLLOW

Panama's immigration decrees, including Decree 17 of 2026 for investors and Decree 16 of 2026 for Friendly Nations. We cite official sources on every guide.

Residency is not the same as tax residency

A Panama residence card lets you live in Panama. It does not by itself change where you pay tax. Americans are generally taxed on citizenship and keep filing U.S. returns, and Canadians must handle the CRA's rules for leaving Canada. We plan both together with your tax professional.

Our process

  1. Map: a free consultation to understand your passport, income, family and goals.
  2. Match: choose the residency route your facts support.
  3. Prepare: background checks, apostilles, translations and proof of funds.
  4. File: travel to Panama; our partner law firm files and you complete biometrics.
  5. Settle: banking, housing, health insurance and ongoing compliance.
